The Mythological Studies concentration in English
at the University of Maine

The Mythological Studies concentration in English at the University of Maine at Fort Kent principally approaches mythic literature through the lens of depth psychology and the explorations of mythic investigators such as Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, James Hillman, Marija Gimbutas, Marie-Louise von Franz, Karl Kerenyi, and Clarissa Pinkola Estes, among others. The concentration encourages the interdisciplinary study of belief systems, rituals, sacred images, symbols and archetypal patterns that are a part of our shared cultural inheritance. Students seeking personal growth and exploration will find the tools to do so in the multifaceted mythic symbols and archetypal patterns found in literature, art, and music.  Professors Joseph E. Becker and Geraldine Cannon Becker have engaged in Jungian studies for over a decade, and bring a wide range of cultural perspectives to the study of mythology at UMFK.
